Nepal: Telecommunications Sector Reform Project

The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board.

CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA—US$22.56 million
TERMS: Grace Period = 10 years, Maturity = 40 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Telecommunications Sector Reform Project has two main components. One is the institutional building component focused on strengthening policy and regulatory capacities necessary in the evolving multi-operator environment. Most of the funds will be used for technical assistance to cope with the rapidly changing sector environment. The second component supports the licensing of a private rural operator through a market mechanism to provide telecommunications services in 534 rural communities (VDCs) in the Eastern Region, accounting for roughly 25 percent of all rural communities nationwide without any access to telephone services. The project specifically targets low-income, rural, and other disadvantaged people and will provide them with telecommunications and information services, often for the first time. For more information, call Ricardo Castro at (202) 458.5157, fax at 522.0321, or e-mail rcastro3@worldbank.org
