Snapshots that illustrate the World Bank's work and the positive impact of development projects in Nepal.
- Poverty Alleviation FundThe Poverty Alleviation Fund was designed to address the root causes of Nepal’s civil conflict - poverty, inequality, and lack of services - and the program began implementation at the height of the conflict about four years ago. It is a targeted program for the marginalized and the excluded, either because of gender, caste, ethnicity and location.
- Quality of international phone connections improved
The World Bank has been involved in telecommunications in Nepal since 1969. With support from the Bank, the number of working telephone connections in the country quadrupled in the 1970s. Subsequent projects established the backbone of a high-capacity, modern long-distance network, helping to bring service to rural areas. A satellite earth station has significantly improved the quality of international telephone services and enabled the introduction of modern services like facsimile and data transmissions.
- Road maintenance system introducedSince 1970, the World Bank has funded six road projects in Nepal. The projects have supported road rehabilitation and maintenance and have helped the government develop sustainable funding for the sector. By improving mobility and access, the projects are generating economic opportunities in some of the poorest regions of the country. In addition, the Bank has helped the government develop a transport plan which has now been adopted as the guide for balanced investments in development and maintenance of the roads network.
